The SKEP on-line database incorporates the 'Karoo Bibliography' - a DST-funded project coordinated by Timm Hoffman at the Plant Conservation Unit at the University of Cape Town. The Karoo bibliography contains over 12,000 references and comprises the most comprehensive database of literature dealing with southern Africa's Arid Zone from 1759 to the beginning of 2007. If you know of any material which could be included in the database, please e-mail the information to skep@sanbi.org or to Neziswa Nqayi at the Niven Library.
The SKEP database is intended to support conservation priorities into land use planning and policy making in the Succulent Karoo Biome. The compilation of the database is a collaboration between SKEP and the Percy FitzPatrick Institute at the University of Cape Town, funded by the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund and supported by the Botanical Society of S.A. The project is managed as an Internship to enable newly graduated librarians to get hands-on experience working in the field of natural sciences, in particular the biodiversity of South Africa.
